Multicultural Day at St Peter in Eastgate School
(TEN project)

Thursday 12th November 2009

The children at St Peter's enjoyed fun Gamelan workshops with musician Matt Godfrey. Year 1, 2 and reception class all had the chance to experience playing the Gamelan instruments and make music with the strong directive drumming from Matt on the Kendhang. Over 90 children had the opportunity to take part in these workshops.

The music workshops were also accompanied by arts workshops with photographer Davina Galligan and artist Ruth O'Sullivan. The children produced a series of drawings based on Davina's photography of instruments and musicians from the TEN project. These drawings will be used to produce posters and postcards to publicise the project.

Musicians Kathy Berg, Matt Godfrey, Elizabeth Williams and Ruth O'Sullivan also performed 2 new compositions by Matt Godfrey and 4 traditional Javanese melodies. This work was recorded by ARC recordings and will be available as part of the TEN project's C.D 'TENcompose'.

The 'TEN project' is funded by Youth Music and Lincolnshire County Council.

The 'TEN project' has been awarded recognition on the London 2012 'Inspire Programme' East Midlands.

New Walk Museum

The Gamelan Collective performed four traditional Javanese pieces at the event.

The event hosted creative projects such as Lyric Lounge, Bollywood dance group and the TEN Project (Gamelan Collective).

The performance was well received and a good event to attend for future events and collaboration work.

Festival workshops with Matt Godfrey

We all enjoyed playing Gamelan outdoors at this friendly, happy hippy festival.
The sunshine was lovely and small children, teenagers and adults all had the opportunity to play the instruments and improvise/play pieces.

Gamelan on the Go!

In a fun afternoon performance Kathy, Elizabeth, Lyn and Ruth performed 'Pankur', 'Asmaradana', 'Mugirahaya'and 'Wilujeng'. The group enjoyed improvising in between pieces.

The Healthy Hub provides a organic healthy cafe and the group played to customers having their Sunday meal!

Gamelan with 3D Youth

Children at 3D Youth have enjoyed playing gamelan in a series of afterschool workshops at Moorlands Community Centre.

Leaders Ken & Diane Carchedi invited Ruth O'Sullivan back to work with the children and she wrote a new composition to work on called 'Mouse Deer Chant' (see below).

At the end of the session, we had a small performance to the group. Twins Billy and Jack took it in turns to play Kendhang and Peking creating their own small compositions. Talented Jake performed 'Pankur' - one of the pieces that Gamelan Collective are performing at the Healthy Hub gig on Sunday. Joshua played all pieces including his own composition on Saron.

The Rhythm of Gamelan

Elizabeth, Matt, Ruth and Joshua and Jasmine made the journey to hear Javanese Gamelan performances and take part in the family workshop and Klenengan.

The performance/workshops were held in the Royal Festival Hall foyer and a variety of groups came to perform what they had learnt over the last term. We were treated to a Jazz fusion Gamelan piece with Trumpets and Trombone.

The Klenengan was a musical challenge and enjoyed by a wide range of Gamelan players who had travelled from all over the U.K to take part in the event.

Josh enjoyed playing Gongs in the Klenengan, Elizabeth play Kenong and Ruth played Peking and Slenthem. We were all given notation to take home for future use and we all felt that the event was a great experience and learning opportunity!
